Benchmarking against the products that already rank

Ad creative gets better fast once you stop guessing at angles and start reading what the products already winning your category keep repeating.

Most ad creative briefs start from a blank page and a moodboard. That's backwards. Somewhere in your category, a handful of products are already spending real money on angles that work — Google and Meta wouldn't keep showing the same creative if it weren't converting.

The angles below are the ones that show up over and over once you pull a category's top-ranked ad creative and actually look at what recurs. Treat this as a checklist against your own set, not a template to copy line for line.

01 · Angle · sensory proof

The texture close-up

A tight, almost uncomfortably close shot of the product's surface — grain, crunch, weave, sheen — shows up constantly in categories where a buyer can't touch the product before buying. It's doing the job a physical store would do for free.

This works whether you're selling salsa or a jacket. The rule is the same: get close enough that the texture becomes the whole frame.

02 · Angle · built for the shift

Product in use, mid-action

Not a posed lifestyle shot — a moment mid-task, where the product is clearly doing its job under real conditions. This angle recurs most in categories selling durability or performance, because it's the fastest way to prove a claim without saying it.

It also tends to outperform static product-only ads on view-through rate, since it reads as content first and an ad second.

03 · Angle · earned trust

The origin or process story

Where it's made, what it's made from, or the process behind it. This angle is doing quiet work: it's the creative equivalent of the comparison slot on a listing — it gives a skeptical buyer a specific, checkable reason to trust the product over a generic alternative.

It doesn't need to be elaborate. A single frame naming the ingredient, material, or method is usually enough to earn the click.

04 · Angle · shows the engineering

Ventilation, mechanism, or cutaway

A diagram-style cutaway or callout that shows how something works, not just that it works, recurs heavily in any category with a functional claim — climate control, support, absorption, insulation.

This is the one angle most sellers already have from their listing's feature-callout slot. Reusing it as ad creative is close to free.

05 · Angle · names the alternative

The direct comparison

Ads that put the product next to a generic or unbranded stand-in for 'what you're using now' consistently recur in mature categories, because the buyer already knows the alternative — the ad just has to make the gap visible.

As with the listing version of this angle, the ceiling is honesty. A comparison the buyer disputes on arrival costs more than it earns.

The point of benchmarking isn't to run the same five ads as everyone else — it's to know which angle each recurring pattern is actually proving, so your version can prove it better, in your brand, instead of guessing at a sixth angle nobody's testing yet.
